Big thanks to all of YOU, near and far, for coming together and helping us make great strides! And not just in the restoration process, but in the nurturing and expansion of this vibrant community that we call home.

We had a wonderful turnout, and so much fun, at our annual fundraiser! Many thanks go to all the volunteers who made it truly special. Laura Aldridge shared her Haunted History of the Shoals Ghost Talk; we had the local Ghostbusters car on the scene, and a huge, inflatable castle for the kiddos to frolic about in. Not to mention, the perfect weather to boot!

At last month's gathering, Camilla and Alex got more of the Winnie the Pooh mural restored; more painting was done on the stairwell walls and basement hallway. Greg and Clayton (of MSNHA) got an outdoor drain cleared (no small feat, many years of debris to get through!) that had been pushing water into the basement.
We still have a long road ahead, but we feel so encouraged and inspired! Thanks so much to everyone who has pitched in, donated, and/or spread the word!

Speaking of spreading the word…we made the news this week! Read it here!

Our big announcement is about our Fall Fundraiser!
SAVE THE DATE! It was also an early example of pre-fab construction; all the pieces, tiles and materials were numbered and organized by style, house and location in the neighborhood! Original plans of the neighborhood included many more houses and buildings to make it a fully functional community. Your donation dollars and volunteer contributions have been hard at work this past year!!
Thank you!!
Special big thanks goes out to Matthew DeOrazio and Bryan Joyce, who assisted our director, Greg Harrison on the painting of the auditorium (!!), office, and the lime-horsehair plaster work on the ceilings. We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but feel so encouraged by the progress we made in 2022. Thanks to @muscleshoalsnha for facilitating funding and volunteer coordination!!

We’ll have monthly volunteer dates again, starting up in February (weather permitting) and more events and gatherings as we get into summer and fall. Stay tuned!

Thanks so much for all your support and cheerleading this past year!!

Dr. Samuel Frederick Strain, a doctor with the TVA arrived in Sheffield March 1, 1934, with his wife, Jess. They were transferred from Knoxville, and initially lived in house number 54 (further down from the bell on what is now Wilson Dam Ave).

They were delighted to be assigned house number 94 after it was renovated; it was a larger house and lot, big enough to plant a large vegetable garden.

He said that they found some of the “best friends they had known” while living here.

Excerpts from his book:

From the Nolichucky to Memphis: Reminisces of a Tennessee Doctor (by Dr. Samuel Frederick Strain)

And that is one of the many things that makes The Village special - that sense of community and connection; whether you lived here then or now, we’re all connected by this place, and that feeling stays with you.

This TVA Police and Fire Station was located at Nitrate Plant No. 1.

E. J. Martin (first in the photo), was the former Chief of the Public Safety Service at TVA. He came to Sheffield in February 1918 in the midst of the flu epidemic.

He was witness to the construction of the Village and “saw it go from cisterns and cornfields up to where it is today. I’d never seen so many carpenters in my life!”

He lived at 400 Watts Bar and died in 1993, aged 94.

Before The Village was constructed, it was farmland. There was a streetcar line along old Cherokee Pike (now Blackwell Rd.), that would run to Tuscumbia and Florence.

He was interviewed by Colonel Chick Wann in April 1985. You can read the full transcript here or in the book, Sheffield: History and Recollections - The Journal of Muscle Shoals History, Vol XVIII (Available through the Tennessee Valley Historical Society or at the local library).
The Village School Foundationtag:thevillageschoolfoundation.org,2005:Post/69687222022-05-11T12:26:15-05:002022-05-11T12:31:10-05:00Tuscumbia Landing Site

We had such a fun morning hiking to Tuscumbia Landing Saturday morning. We really lucked out with the weather being fresh and cool, and no rain! Thanks everyone for joining us!

We were able to see part of the site where the Ammonium Nitrate plant was (though it is quite overgrown with foliage). This building was placed away from The Village and the other buildings, as it was a highly explosive material and process.

…

The Tuscumbia Landing Site is a historic port site near Sheffield, Alabama. The landing was established in 1824 at the mouth of Spring Creek on the Tennessee River. As large craft could not navigate Spring Creek to reach Tuscumbia, the landing was built to transfer goods to and from the town. The New Orleans and Tuscumbia Steamboat Company was created in 1825, and connected The Shoals with towns on the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. Wagons were used to haul goods between the landing and the town until a horse-drawn railroad, the first railroad west of the Appalachian Mountains, was built from 1831 to 1832. The line was later extended to Decatur in 1834, bypassing the treacherous shoals on the Tennessee River, and was renamed the Tuscumbia, Courtland and Decatur Railroad. The landing was also a stop for many Muscogee and Cherokee along the Trail of Tears.

These are two of the old boilers that are still left in the basements of two Village homes. In many of the homes, the boilers were removed when modern HVAC arrived and/or when basements were sealed off as extra storage space.

Does your Village home have one still? We’d love to see your photos and hear stories of what you remember about this early form of heat in the home and how central air changed life in The Village.

A brief history as found on a sustainable dwelling blog:

Prior to 1885 the majority of homes in America were heated with wood burning brick fireplaces and derivatives of the cast iron Franklin Stove invented in 1742.

By the end of the 19th century the invention of low cost cast iron radiators would bring central heating to America’s homes with a coal fired boiler in the basement delivering hot water or steam to radiators in every room.
The Village School Foundationtag:thevillageschoolfoundation.org,2005:Post/69600872022-04-29T13:27:38-05:002022-04-29T13:27:38-05:00Two Views - 1918/2022
Two views of the 500 block of Wilson Dam Ave in The Village:

French Style has locking tabs on the sides and top;

Nearly all French style tiles are interlocking meaning the tiles hold onto the ones next to it to create a strong and durable roof.

Spanish Style is profiled like the letter “S” so each piece functions as both a pan and a cover.

We’re not quite certain why Spanish style was used on the school, but I suspect it had to do with size of the project and availability of materials.

You can see the comparison in the photos below: the school/Spanish style (L), and one of the Village homes, French style (R).

due to the size of the school, we’ve had to take the roofing project in sections. This week, we are working on the front hallway, office and classroom areas.

As you can see from some of the interior ceiling pictures, those roof leaks have caused extensive damage. We’ve been waiting to do some of those interior repairs until we had the roof sealed up and repaired.

Look for more progress and past pictures soon.

If you’d like to help out and contribute to the ongoing restoration projects here, please visit www.thevillageschoolfoundation.org to donate and/or sign up to volunteer! We will be having several volunteer events through the spring and summer…stay tuned!

Thanks so much!!

Geological survey: Perry site

They were a number of geological surveys in Alabama as part of Alabama Museum of Natural History and prepared with the assistance of the WPA and the cooperation of the TVA.

One of the geological survey’s conducted was at the Perry site on the northern end of Seven Mile Island and the Tennessee River near Sheffield, Alabama.

Excavation of important selected sites began May 4, 1936.
In their excavations they found charred shell, flint, pottery, fire pits and burials of both humans and dogs. At the Perry site alone 358 burials were reported. From the general excavation exclusive of burial associations, there were 12,361 Flint artifacts.

The Pickwick Landing Dam on the Tennessee River was authorized by Congress November 19, 1934; the Dam was completed and the gates were closed February 8, 1938. At that time the reservoir began to fill and the rising water began to submerge scores of archaeological sites in the Pickwick basin.
The Alabama Museum of Natural History, located on the campus at University of Alabama, is one of the state’s main repositories of human artifacts. Founded in 1831, it is the oldest museum in Alabama.
Archeologist David L. DeJarnette was hired in 1929 and conducted many of the major excavations, including the Perry site. He went on to train a whole generation of Alabama archeologists as a professor at the university’s anthropology department.

While most likely there will be more roof restoration to be done down the road, this grant will provide funding required to restore sections that have been causing the building trouble for decades.

Once the roof is repaired, we can delve into interior restoration of plaster, paint, and floors.

We are not simply repairing the roof, but restoring it completely, section by section, as funding becomes available. It is our hope that the building can be enjoyed for generations.

The grant application was written by VSF on behalf of the City of Sheffield and was awarded by the Alabama Historic Commission.

Special thanks to the AHC for this, our third grant from them, and for their continued support and confidence in our project of restoring The Village One School.
Thanks to our Mayor and city council as well, for their continued support.
Thanks to all of our public supporters, our neighbors and the community.

It is estimated that 40 million people died in the First World War between 1914 and 1918. In that final year of the war the great influenza pandemic took hold and was to cause possibly 50 million fatalities, some estimates claiming a global death toll as high as 100 million.
From a 2018 article in AL.com :
"It is impossible to know for sure exactly how many Alabamans were affected by the flu, since regular reports to the U.S. Public Health Service were never made. But it is known that during the last two weeks of October, more than 37,000 cases of the flu erupted in Alabama. The Village had been constructed to provide housing for U.S. Army Ordnance officers and men working at the nearby ammonium nitrate plant. He lived in the Lt. Colonels Residence, off what is now Guntersville Circle, with his wife Emma and their three teenage sons, Joseph, Jack, and Hardee Jr.

Lt. Colonel Chambliss was a Virginia Military Institute graduate, class of 1894 and the grandson of Lieutenant General William Hardee of the Confederate Army. His accomplishments include: M.S., Vanderbilt University; Ph. D, Johns Hopkins University; Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; Member of American Chemical Society; Member of the Society of Chemical Industry.

Hardee Chambliss joined the U.S. Army in 1917, after U.S involvement in World War One began. He expressed a preference for “duty in the line and at the front”, but his services were deemed too valuable to the Government. At this time, the U.S Army was struggling to fill positions that required the academics needed to design and manufacture the new weapons of modern warfare. He was commissioned as a Major with the Ordnance Department, and assigned duty with the Gun Division, afterwards incorporated into the Chemical Warfare Service. He transferred to the Nitrate Division and was made their representative in New York. He was then ordered to United States Nitrate Plant No. One at Sheffield, Alabama as Commanding Officer and promoted to the rank of Lt. Colonel.

Lt. Col Chambliss lived in the Village and worked at the plant with a team of Army Ordnance Department engineers and chemists working out the design and operation of the experimental Ammonium Nitrate Plant, until he left the service in 1921. From there he and his family moved to Washington, DC where Chambliss became Dean of Students at Catholic University.

Construction began 10/23/1917.

The Village is an excellent example of prefabrication and standardization. In order to save time and money, all hardware was standardized and large crews were put on each project. When the First World War ended with the signing of the armistice on 11/11/1918, construction and operation were out on standby.

The large windows and the vented roof offer maximum airflow to keep cooler in the summer months. The design of the basement, having windows as well, offers plenty of natural light and fresh air.

While WW1 was a driving force in construction, the formation of the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority, 1933) was instrumental in giving the well-built neighborhood new purpose.

The world has gone through many changes the last 100+ years, but the Village and the original structures have maintained their integrity. It’s a testament to the sturdy construction and innovative designs implemented.

Even our trusty schoolhouse, having been neglected for a long stretch of time, is still standing and sturdy in many ways.

With the help of the community and funding from various preservation grants, we look forward to to restoring the building completely and giving it new life.

Today's photos show the auditorium, the large windows in the auditorium, and the view from the upper balcony.

The auditorium was used not only for performances and lectures, but for movies and news reel showings. The stage has recessed lighting, and there's a fire-proof projection booth upstairs behind the balcony (the film reels were highly flammable!).

The windows open on the upper and lower sash, and with windows all around, you can get a really nice cross-breeze flowing through.

The ceilings in the auditorium are in amazing condition considering the age and the various roof leaks we've had to address in our restoration process.
